New Mexico: St. Vincent, others to tackle substance abuse issues

St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico is partnering with six other community and government health care organizations to provide substance abuse services in northern New Mexico under a $17.5 million federal grant.

The Sangre de Cristo Community Health Partnership will deliver behavioral health services through clinics in the northern part of the state of New Mexico. It was formed as part of a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The partnership will receive $3.5 million a year to provide drug abuse screening, intervention, referrals and treatment in a primary care setting in 17 counties in New Mexico.

"The sooner we can intervene with people who are abusing drugs, the better chance we have of getting them off the road to addiction," said Gary Buff, who oversees the community outreach program at St. Vincent.

"By giving primary care facilities the resources to conduct brief interventions, more users will receive help before it's too late."

The grant will allow the partnership to hire 22 drug abuse counselors to work in primary care clinics around the state.

Members of the Partnership include St. Vincent Hospital, La Familia Community Health Center, Health Centers of Northern New Mexico, Santa Fe County, New Mexico; Rio Arriba County, New Mexico; the Rio Arriba Family Care Network, and La Clinicas Del Norte.
